Out of School ServicesEstablished in 2002, the Beacon Center at Grover Washington Jr. Middle School, located at B Street and Olney Avenue in North Philadelphia, is a school-based community center which provides a safe haven for children and families in the community. In the last year, the Out of School Services division has grown to include another Beacon Center at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, located at 5120 N. 6th Street. In addition to the Beacon Centers, there are three After School sites located at Carnell Elementary School at 1100 Devereaux Street, Morrison Elementary School at 5100 N. 3rd Street, and The Neumann Center at 1000 Orthodox Avenue, all in Philadelphia.Academic Year ProgrammingBeacon Center – After School programming is provided from 3:30–6:00 pm for kindergarten through eighth grade. The curriculums that are implemented are Micro Society, 100 Book Challenge, Achieve 3000 and Project Adventure. Also included are homework assistance, snacks, recreation, arts and crafts, dance, drama, and science. In the evening, from 6:30-8:30 pm, the community center offers programs such as basketball, Girl Scouts, SAT preparation, dance classes, Youth Council, mentoring programs, and music programs. These evening programs are also provided on Saturdays from 9:00-4:00 pm.After School Sites – After school programming is provided from 3:30-6:00 pm for grades kindergarten through eighth grades. The curriculums focus on literacy and math, as well as cultural activities, recreation, homework help, snacks and arts and crafts. Summer ProgrammingBeacon Center – The Beacon Centers offer a summer camp from 8:30-4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, as well as Before Care from 8:00-8:30 am, and After Care from 4:30-6:00 pm. The Beacon Centers use a variety of curriculums implemented throughout the academic year, focusing on a central theme such as Nations Explorers or Beacon Bucks, which is a money management curriculum. Also, the students will go on many exciting and educational field trips to complement the curriculum. After School Sites – The After School sites offer a summer camp from 8:30-4:30 pm, Monday through Friday to build in the curriculum planned throughout the academic year. They focus on a central theme which will help build the students' literacy and math skills in a fun, educational setting. The children learn those skills through activities meant to stimulate and enhance their education. Summer Youth Works – Monday through Friday during the summer camp programs at the Beacon Center. The Beacon Center will hire 25 high school youth, ages 14+, to work as Junior Camp Counselors with the elementary and middle school youth through Youth Works. |
